Editing Events

As I mentioned in my last news post, you previously were only able to edit events that you had created. I've just updated the site to allow anyone who is allowed to edit either an artist or venue (as was talked about in the previous post) to also edit any events that link to that artist or venue listing.

If you're a band member or artist who has a listing on the site but can't edit your artist profile, send me a message and I'll grant you the needed permissions.

Currently the "My Content" page still only lists events that you created, but I should have some time by this weekend to update it to show all the events which you have access to.

As always, if you have any feedback about the site send a message through the Contact Form. I also appreciate your feedback through the available surveys.

User Accounts & Editing Content

Accounts on KelownaGigs are pretty flexible; you can create one with (pretty much) whatever username you desire. The intent however, is that your account represents you as a person (think Facebook, not MySpace). Artist listings for both individuals and groups are separate from your user account (again, think of Facebook Pages, not MySpace artist accounts).

In order to make this more sensible, I have implemented a new stage of permission control. Previously, only the creator of an artist or venue listing was able to edit that listing. As of about an hour ago, there is a new field when editing either type of profile to list other users who should be granted access to edit the same profile. This way you can create a personal account for yourself, and then add your band members or staff's accounts to your band or venue's profile.

Local Showcase at Habitat with Windborn

Windborn is set to kick of a showcase of local talent at Habitat on Saturday, February 20th. The premise is to feature 4 local bands every month, playing equal sets. Be sure to check it out so that it has a good chance of being a regular event.

Oceans Apart has filled their lineup

Oceans Apart, led by former Stutterfly frontman Chris Stickney, announced earlier this week via Myspace and Facebook that they have filled their lineup with the addition of Norrie Henderson and Stephen Sohnchen on guitar, and Karsten Priebe on drums.

Oceans Apart has been simmering in the background since late 2006, when it started as a collaboration between Chris Stickney and Matt Kelly of Born For Battle. They released a few demo songs and played some shows early 2009, but have been relatively quiet. Their style is a departure from that of both former bands, but definitely worth checking out.

Importing Facebook Events!

After a lot of work, there is now a handy tool for importing events from Facebook into KelownaGigs. A link to it will stay in the left menu, just above the 'Create Content' item. Don't see either of those? That's because, just like adding events to the site, importing from Facebook requires you to register an account here and log in. It's easy to do, it's free, and it helps me to figure out what to work on next.

There is also now a cute little robot wandering around the net to find events too. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't let us know about your events or add them to the site yourself, because who knows when I'll get around to it (especially when midterms exams start) and we want everyone to know about your event as soon as possible, right?

Project Wonderful Advertising

We've added a new advertising provider to the site.
Why? So you can more easily advertise! Advertising works like an auction with the person willing to pay the most getting the spot, but the best part is if you're the only bidder your ad is displayed for free! Click the "your ad here" text underneath the ads to check out some more information on how it works, and place a bid!
Promote a show, promote your band, promote a CD! If it has to do with music we'll approve it right away.

Free Recording

Hey, I'm currently a student at Okanagan College in "audio engineering and music production". I'm currently looking for a local band interested in helping us out with our recording unit/course. We are doing free analog recording for a band, if interested please contact!

New Platform

Welcome to the beginnings of the new KelownaGigs.com, based on the Drupal Content Management System. We have worked hard to transfer everything on the old site to here.

We welcome your suggestions. Part of the reason for the upgrade is to give you more information and let you be more involved. You can start by filling out our surveys for Users, Artists or Venues; feel free to fill out each of them if they apply to you. If you have any info for the site or any other feedback, visit the Contact page to send us a message.
