Looking to play a show in Kelowna?

As the summer starts to heat up, more requests are coming in from bands looking to stop in Kelowna to play a show.  To help, I've just added Event Classifieds to the site. Hopefully this new feature helps match up more great local music in Kelowna!

If you're a band travelling through Kelowna this summer, or even a local band looking to play, create an account on the site and post a listing.  You can also create a listing if you've already got a show, but are looking for someone to open or fill out your lineup.

If you have any other suggestions for how this site can help you find or host events, let us know!

We Are The City release music video

The young guys in We Are The City are making big moves recently.  Their song Astronomers was just featured in the February 21st episode of Being Human.

They also just announced the release of their music video for Happy New Year made by Amazing Factory Productions for their new release, High School.  Check out the quirky video for the snappy two and a half minute song, and keep posted for the rest of the six videos they're set to release for the album.

You'll be able to see them live in April at the Kelowna Community Theatre with Aidan Knight, Said the Whale, and Kingdom Cloud.

Nixie featured in Event! magazine

Kelowna natives Nixie were featured in this past weekend's issue of Event! magazine, promoting their new album and upcoming release show.

They talk about their unique, guitar-less sound, that came out of their change in creative direction from their original band, Terza Rima, and the events leading to them getting into the studio.

Upload your photos

I've wanted to improve KelownaGigs beyond a listing site for a long time.  The biggest step started a year ago when I began moving the site to Drupal, making it much easier for people to add their own information.  The latest piece is now in place, allowing you to upload your own photos to the site.

Every event, artist, and venue on the site now has an "Add a Photo Set" link after its main information, allowing you to upload your photos for that item.  They will then show up everywhere they belong: upload photos for an event and every artist playing will have them on their own pages (check out a really old event I have photos from).  They'll also show up on the front page for a while, and I'll work on adding some more pages for people to find your photos.

There is one essential rule though: don't upload photos you don't own.  I'll add some more legal text later, but you have to be able to legally allow us to host and distribute the photos you upload.  If you can add a Creative Commons License would be awesome, but we'll add an option for a more restrictive licensing too if you don't want others to share your photos.

Breakout West Music Festival

A little late on this one, but I hope you've already heard about the Breakout West Music Festival occuring right now.  Yesterday through tomorrow (October 21st to 23rd), several venues are hosting live music and all you need to see any of it is one $20 wrist band for the entire weekend.  There's some artists you might already know about, but lots more who you probably don't and are they are probably awesome.

The festival is part of The Western Canadian Music Awards, with the awards gala happening on Sunday, October 24th.  The gala features so many artists that it broke part of the site (well, not really broke it, just made things look funny, and it's fixed now).  You need a separate $42 ticket for the gala, but with over 15 artists on the bill it should be a good value for a unique event.

Australian Indie Band 'The Firetree' Touring BC in November

Centred around the vocals of Dale Buchan and Josephine Cubis, The Firetree are an independent five-piece band from Byron Bay, Australia. Their energetic live shows, blending an indie folk sound with rock sensibilities, have ensured a loyal fan base on the east coast of Australia.

Following in the tradition of Angus & Julia Stone and Stars, the band has a strong focus on songwriting. Their catchy, upbeat tracks are brought to life with sublime harmonies and the contrast between two different yet complimentary vocalists.

Now The Firetree are releasing their highly anticipated debut EP, The Space Between, with free digital downloads available for fans on Facebook. Recorded at 301 Studio with acclaimed producer Murray Burns, the album showcases the unique sound and duality of the group.

Joe Satriani at The Kelown Community Theatre

A new show popped up from TicketMaster yesterday: Joe Satriani at the Kelowna Community Theatre. I'm sure those who listen to the radio may have already heard, since it is sponsored by Power104, but I had to do a double-take at seeing it.

It doesn't look like too many of the 'cheap' tickets (at $77 each) are available, so best get them soon if you don't want to pay for premium tickets ($190 each). Premium tickets do come with quite a few extras, and a Meet & Greet package is also available.

Go to the TicketMaster event.

New Events from Select Your Tickets

It's probably a little late in posting a few, but there a half dozen new events at Prospera Place, The Kelowna Community Theatre, and The Rotary Centre for the Arts with tickets available through SelectYourTickets.com

Check out the venue pages or the new events page to see what's available, or subscribe to the RSS feeds that were added to the site last month to keep up to date.

Feedback and RSS Feeds!

You may have noticed a "Feedback" link floating in the bottom right corner of the site for a while now. It's a quick way to send me a note if you find something broken on the site, and it will let me know which page you're on and what browser you're using. So far it's mostly been useful for catching spam, but I've also gotten one great suggestion out of it from an anonymous visitor.

Now there are three RSS feeds available on the site: News, Upcoming Events, and New Events. Check them out, add them to your reader, and stay up to date! If you have any suggestions for other info you would like to stay up to date with through an RSS feed, let me know.

Upcoming shows at the Kelowna Community Theatre

A couple new shows have popped up at the Kelowna Community Theatre: Sarah Harmer on Tuesday, September 21st (Ticketmaster) and Stars on Wednesday November 3rd (Ticketmaster). If you missed it, a month ago Broken Social Scene was also set to play on Sunday October 10th (Ticketmaster). Great tickets for Stars and Sarah Harmer, and good tickets for Broken Social scene are still available, so check them out and grab your tickets soon.
