New Events from Select Your Tickets

It's probably a little late in posting a few, but there a half dozen new events at Prospera Place, The Kelowna Community Theatre, and The Rotary Centre for the Arts with tickets available through SelectYourTickets.com

Check out the venue pages or the new events page to see what's available, or subscribe to the RSS feeds that were added to the site last month to keep up to date.

Feedback and RSS Feeds!

You may have noticed a "Feedback" link floating in the bottom right corner of the site for a while now. It's a quick way to send me a note if you find something broken on the site, and it will let me know which page you're on and what browser you're using. So far it's mostly been useful for catching spam, but I've also gotten one great suggestion out of it from an anonymous visitor.

Now there are three RSS feeds available on the site: News, Upcoming Events, and New Events. Check them out, add them to your reader, and stay up to date! If you have any suggestions for other info you would like to stay up to date with through an RSS feed, let me know.

Upcoming shows at the Kelowna Community Theatre

A couple new shows have popped up at the Kelowna Community Theatre: Sarah Harmer on Tuesday, September 21st (Ticketmaster) and Stars on Wednesday November 3rd (Ticketmaster). If you missed it, a month ago Broken Social Scene was also set to play on Sunday October 10th (Ticketmaster). Great tickets for Stars and Sarah Harmer, and good tickets for Broken Social scene are still available, so check them out and grab your tickets soon.

Life Featured in eVent!

Ahead of their CD release party Friday at Flashbacks, the local band Life are featured in today's issue of eVent! in the Okanagan Sunday newspaper. They talk about the issues in putting their latest album together, including member changes and a significant table saw accident a year ago.

The article isn't available online, so check your newspaper for the article, and pickup a ticket to see them live.

The Canadian Music Wiki

Today on CBC Radio3 with Grant Lawrence, there is talk of the new Canadian Music Wiki site. The discussion was on who should get a page on the wiki, and so far the attitude seems pretty inclusive; all the artists on CBCR3's New Music Canada listing are already imported into the wiki.

Here on KelownaGigs we're pretty inclusive as well: any band who we know has ever played in Kelowna currently has a page. We're not quite a wiki yet, but you can always add your comments on any artist, and we're working to open up the artist pages for some wiki-style editing.

MusicBC Marketing and Publicity Workshop

MusicBC is hosting a Career Development Workshop at the Habitat on June 19th, with a topic of "Marketing and Publicity: using new/ old media to build awareness about your brand and band."

Presenters include journalist Marshall Jones of the now closed Kelowna.com on using local media for promotion, James Shaw of TwinCreek Media on integrated marketing campaigns, and Nico Boesten of Sayvee.

If you're a student or a MusicBC member you can get in for free, otherwise it's a mere $10. Check out the Facebook event for some more information.

Submitting Articles

The articles section of the site was been pretty sparse for a while, and I'm not a very good writer, so now any user of the site is able to submit new articles. Just log in (or register, if you haven't), and you'll see a new 'News Article' link in the left menu under 'Create Content'.

Write about yourself if you're a new band (and create a profile on the site while you're at it), or about your upcoming tour or new album. If you're hosting a show with a big touring band, you can write about that too. Got some insights into the music industry, or found something worth sharing? If you think it's interesting, send it in.

Just so we can keep a little bit of control on what is posted to the site, you can either save your article as a draft to work on some more later, or set it for review so we can check it over before it shows up on the site. We should check things over pretty quickly though, and get your article up for people to see as soon as possible.

Editing Events

As I mentioned in my last news post, you previously were only able to edit events that you had created. I've just updated the site to allow anyone who is allowed to edit either an artist or venue (as was talked about in the previous post) to also edit any events that link to that artist or venue listing.

If you're a band member or artist who has a listing on the site but can't edit your artist profile, send me a message and I'll grant you the needed permissions.

Currently the "My Content" page still only lists events that you created, but I should have some time by this weekend to update it to show all the events which you have access to.

As always, if you have any feedback about the site send a message through the Contact Form. I also appreciate your feedback through the available surveys.

User Accounts & Editing Content

Accounts on KelownaGigs are pretty flexible; you can create one with (pretty much) whatever username you desire. The intent however, is that your account represents you as a person (think Facebook, not MySpace). Artist listings for both individuals and groups are separate from your user account (again, think of Facebook Pages, not MySpace artist accounts).

In order to make this more sensible, I have implemented a new stage of permission control. Previously, only the creator of an artist or venue listing was able to edit that listing. As of about an hour ago, there is a new field when editing either type of profile to list other users who should be granted access to edit the same profile. This way you can create a personal account for yourself, and then add your band members or staff's accounts to your band or venue's profile.

Local Showcase at Habitat with Windborn

Windborn is set to kick of a showcase of local talent at Habitat on Saturday, February 20th. The premise is to feature 4 local bands every month, playing equal sets. Be sure to check it out so that it has a good chance of being a regular event.
