Kate Miller-Heidke

Fearless. That was the word that kept coming up when Australian singer/songwriter Kate Miller-Heidke was dreaming up her sophomore record (and US debut) Curiouser. Fun was another one. The fact that she dared to dream either while her 2007 Australian debut Little Eve was still ringing loud and clear suggests a couple more F-words. Forward. And Fast.

She had a tough act to follow. After a trilogy of EPs in her home country from ’04 to ’06 – “Telegram”, “Comikaze” and “Circular Breathing” – Little Eve burst onto the scene to land in the upper reaches of the ARIA charts and earned the singer a host of accolades. The album went Gold and clocked up four ARIA nominations.

An Horse

It is not because Kate is the size of jockey or because Damon was once kicked by a goat that An Horse bears its name. There’s no sense in that. A friend once gave Kate a sweater with An Horse written on it because he thought it was grammatically correct. It wasn’t and that was quite a long time ago but Kate still wears the sweater. She hasn’t grown in years. Damon still remembers the goat like it was yesterday.

James Struthers

As a child he wasn’t allowed to play with transformers; as an adult he writes songs about them. That pretty much sums up James Struthers, the light-hearted, shaggy-haired 20 year old, in a nutshell.

Struthers picked up his first guitar six years ago (a Yamaha that suffered an accidental, untimely death at the tires of a pickup truck), but considers himself more of a singer than a guitarist, “I think both are equally important in songwriting, but I’m more confident in my vocal range than my guitar prowess.”

Unlike most singer-songwriters – and musicians in general – Struthers doesn’t always rely on personal experiences for inspiration during the songwriting process. “I draw all of my inspiration from the first line that I write in a song, and it usually comes from nowhere; it’s very detached from myself,” explains Struthers. “However, I have written a lot of songs that have been firmly attached to my experiences or my life, whether intentionally or after the fact.”
